Hundreds of staff and volunteers from West Herts Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust celebrated the amazing achievements of shining local NHS stars at a glittering awards evening held in Watford.

The 2023 Stars of Herts Annual Awards recognise innovative individuals and teams from the trust, who demonstrate excellence and compassion for their patients and colleagues. Finalists were selected from nearly 600 nominations by staff who were keen to recognise the brilliance of their colleagues.

The evening kicked off at the New Watford Market where staff, volunteers and sponsors enjoyed a variety of street food from local vendors. The showpiece main event took place at Watford Palace Theatre where over 600 attendees enjoyed an Oscars-style award ceremony, complete with red carpet, a walk of fame and entertainment from the exuberant Back Chat Brass band.

Chief executive Matthew Coats and non-executive director Ginny Edwards hosted the event, in tandem with local Heart DJ and broadcaster John Darin. Chairman Phil Townsend, although recuperating following an accident, made it on stage to present two awards in his name.

Staff were celebrated across 14 categories in total, marking the brilliant work that happens every day across the trust.

Matthew Coats said: "The event is one of our ways of thanking staff properly for everything they do for patient care and supporting each other. The achievements of the winners and nominees are just amazing, and of course they’re just the tip of the iceberg because they’re representative of all the great things that are going on across our trust."

The evening was also an opportunity to mark the trust’s teaching hospital status and to acknowledge education and training partners with whom the trust works closely. Partnership awards went to Westfield Academy, West Herts College, and the University of Hertfordshire.

The evening would not have been possible without the generous support of sponsors. Thank you to Atos, Briggs & Forrester, McGee, NHS Professionals, GSCI Consultants, Hempsons and Hygiene Contracts.

Congratulations to the 2023 Stars of Herts finalists. See who won on the Stars of Herts awards webpage.
