New car park at St Albans City Hospital
New staff car park at St Albans City Hospital

A new staff car park has opened at St Albans City Hospital, easing congestion on the site and making it easier and simple for staff to get in and out of work each day.

The new facility – built on land opposite the hospital entrance - has 127 parking spaces.

The car park will also help patients access the site more easily by improving the flow of traffic as well as creating additional parking spaces, now staff have their own dedicated area.

Nuala Littlechild, St Albans City Hospital site director, said: “I would like to thank our staff and patients for their understanding over recent months –we know parking has been an issue on site, after the building works removed a number of spaces.

“The new staff car park will help ease congestion on site, improve traffic flow and make it easier for both staff and patients to park.”

West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust will also invest £102,000 towards improvements to the play area next to the car park, at Oysterfields Open Space, for local families to enjoy.

The opening of the new car park marks another major milestone in our ambitious redevelopment plans at St Albans City Hospital, where a state-of-the-art surgical centre and a Community Diagnostic Centre are currently under construction.

The surgical centre will accommodate an extra 4,000 patients a year for those needing hip and knee surgery, spinal injections, and minor ear, nose, and throat (ENT) operations.

Earlier this year, all four of the theatres at St Albans reopened following a major upgrade of the facilities. Improvements included a refurbished staff changing area, improved access within corridors, new flooring, lighting, signage and redecorated rooms.

Essential maintenance works have also been completed, meaning staff and patients are now benefiting from a significantly improved environment.
