Fire incident at Watford General Hospital

Posted: 22 June 2023 - updated at 5.30pm

Picture of Watford General Hospital

We would like to reassure the public that we have worked closely with our partners in Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service to coordinate a response to a fire incident in H block at Watford General Hospital today. This was caused by a fire in an electrical store room which has been put out.

Patients and staff have been safely evacuated from the blood clinic, dermatology and renal services in H block and also from the eye clinic in the ophthalmology building.

There is no disruption to the emergency department (A&E) which remains open.

Patients attending blood clinic, dermatology, renal services and ophthalmology appointments have been asked not to attend any appointments this afternoon. We will be in touch to reschedule.

Women in labour or requiring urgent care should still arrive as usual where they will be escorted into the Women’s and Children’s building.

Visiting is still permitted and the public can access the site via Vicarage Road and Thomas Sawyer Way.

We would like to thank our all staff, police and fire and rescue service colleagues and partner organisations for their prompt and efficient response.
