West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust’s charity, Raise has launched its latest fundraising appeal ‘Imagine This...’ to purchase a high-tech scanner for a new interventional radiology (IR) suite at Watford General Hospital.

The ‘super scanner’ will allow the trust to expand the range and complexity of pinhole surgery offered to patients. The charity’s £695,000 appeal got off to a great start with a pledge of £100,000 from The League of Friends.

Diagnostic and interventional radiology consultant, Dr Muhammad Zamir, who leads the IR team, said: “For people unfamiliar with our work, interventional radiology is a form of image-guided surgery which enables us to carry out minimally invasive pinhole surgery.

“IR uses real-time and hi-tech CT, MRI and X-ray images to guide surgical equipment into parts of the body that are otherwise only reached by open surgery. With the new scanner we’ll be able to conduct more complex operations, so more people can be treated more quickly and closer to home.”

The new IR suite will consist of the treatment room, anaesthetic room and recovery areas with five beds, meaning patients can be welcomed, treated and recuperate all in one space, ensuring privacy and dignity throughout.
