The purple star award was presented to the West Herts Hospital Trust’s St Albans Day Surgery Team in recognition of providing good health equality for people with learning disabilities. The Health Liaison Team from Hertfordshire Health and community services awarded the unit for the reasonable adjustments they had made based on individual the needs of patients, to offer the best service possible.

Helen Burnett, Senior Sister, Day Surgery Unit said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive this award. We’ve been working extremely hard to ensure that our services are accessible to all our patients and visitors and I’m so pleased that we’ve been recognised for the steps that we've taken to ensure that people with learning difficulties are able to access our services.

"We have adapted our unit to suit patients' needs by implementing new better bigger signage, user friendly easy read information leaflets, a meet and greet named nurse, pre-op visits to the unit, plus much more."

She added: "We have two excellent link nurses (Lynn Dubberley and Linda Christian), who have worked hard on our behalf to gain this award and credit should go to these two nurses. We had a great afternoon with the “Purple All Stars” performing a dance routine to funky music. There were lots of purple cakes and we were presented with a certificate and will be receiving a plaque to put on the wall in reception."
