Living in Hertfordshire

Towns and villages

Hertfordshire offers a wide range of different options for living. Many of our staff live in London’s nearby northern fringes, whilst others prefer to live in one of the larger towns in the area, which offer the convenience of urban living, at a lower price than London.

Alternatively, you can take advantage of the peace and quiet of the lovely rural towns and villages of this leafy county, such as Kings Langley, Chorleywood, Tring, Redbourn, and Wheathampstead.

Transport

This part of the country enjoys extremely good transport links, so getting to work shouldn't be a worry.

There are four train services into London from Watford: Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway, London Overground and the Metropolitan line on the Underground. You can be in London Euston in the centre of London in as little as 18 minutes.

From Hemel Hempstead or St Albans you can be in London in around 30 minutes.

The county is also well positioned on mainline tracks to the midlands, the north west and Scotland.

The M1 and M25 motorways pass close by our hospitals, as do the A1 and A41. There is discounted car parking for staff at all three hospital sites, including a state of art, multi-storey car park at Watford General.

We’re in easy reach of numerous international airports, with Luton, Heathrow and Stansted all accessible via car or public transport.

Ours sites are conveniently placed to benefit from the extensive bus services which run regularly. Find out more about transport links for Watford, Hemel Hempstead and St Albans.

Schools and education

Hertfordshire is well-known for its excellent schools – some of the highest performing schools in the country are in the county and the surrounding area. Our recruitment team can help you find a school in the area.

For further education, West Herts College has a campus near the centre of Watford and the University of Hertfordshire is situated in the town of Hatfield.

Things to do

There is plenty to see and do in west Hertfordshire. We have great tracks for cycling, walking, running as well as golf courses and water sports. There are award-winning parks, woods and rivers nearby, as well as zoos, wildlife parks, open farms, stately homes and museums.

There are great clubs, cafés and shopping facilities as well as markets. And our friendly next door neighbour Watford F.C. is a Championship football club.

Each of the hospitals' towns has its own shopping centre and not far from St Albans is Hatfield's Galleria. North London's Brent Cross Shopping Centre is just down the M1.

With its rural feeling, Hertfordshire's towns also offer markets, a wide variety of restaurants and small independent shops, as well as international chains.

Staff accommodation

Our staff accommodation is within a multi-storey block of flats adjacent to the Watford Hospital site. We can offer accommodation to staff and medical students on placements who meet certain criteria.

Each flat available through the Trust is for two people of the same gender. You will have your own room and share the kitchen and bathroom with your flatmate. Tenancy agreements are for one year and the subsidised rent includes furniture, bills and Wi-Fi.
