We're shining a light on the West Hertfordshire Lung Cancer/Mesothelioma Support Group for the NHS70 spotlight on cancer week. Cancer support charity Macmillan consider this to be one of the most successful groups they’ve seen.

Our lung cancer clinical nurse specialists established the group in 2009 with a £500 Macmillan grant. Patients, family members and carers meet once a month to socialise and receive support, information, guidance and complementary therapy. The group welcomes both those with cancer and their carers and around 45 patients and relatives attend monthly. It has been gratefully described by one attendee as a group that enables carers and sufferers to “face the future with realism and without fear”.

Many members have praised the group commenting on the friendly atmosphere. One person said: "It's so wonderful to have somewhere to meet people in the same situation." Another said: "“The support and advice from nurses is always available, and thoughtful events and discussions are arranged monthly."

The group's success is due not only to the hard work and dedication of the lung cancer nurses and our volunteers but to the members themselves who create an atmosphere of friendliness and support for one another.

The group runs entirely on charitable donations which go towards room hire, refreshments, guest speakers and various outings including afternoon tea.
