A Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Watford General Hospital has been awarded the ‘Silver Scalpel Award’: one of the most prestigious honours in surgical training in the UK.
Mr Vanash Patel was presented with the award from the Association of Surgeons in Training (ASiT), recognising his exceptional commitment to the training, mentorship and the development of the next generation of surgeons.
Vanash plays a key role in training surgeons in both colorectal cancer surgery and robotic surgery. He has developed a structured training pathway in which trainees learn colorectal surgery alongside robotic techniques and supported by simulation opportunities.
The aim is not simply to train people to operate a robot, but to shape them into complete colorectal surgeons who can safely deliver advanced minimally invasive surgery.

What makes it particularly meaningful is that nominations come directly from trainees. One of the trainees Vanash has supported said: “Vanash is an exemplary surgeon, educator, and innovator, and his achievements in the early years of his consultancy are both inspiring and a benchmark for others.”
Vanash emphasises that as a Teaching Trust, himself and other surgeons have a duty not only to deliver excellent clinical care but also to develop the workforce of the future. “High quality training ensures that innovation, safety and good clinical judgement continue to evolve within the NHS”, he explains.
Vanash was incredibly honoured to win the award, adding: “Training is one of the most important responsibilities we have as consultants. The surgeons we train today will be caring for patients for the next 30 or 40 years.
“It is a tremendous honour to win, particularly because the award is nominated by trainees. Training has always been one of the most meaningful parts of my role as a consultant.”
