The mortuary team at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (WHHT) has been honoured with a community award for their hard work and dedication during the pandemic.

The team were awarded the ‘COVID-19 champion community appreciation award 2021’ by the Overseas Pakistan Lovers (OPL) charity in recognition of their support to Muslim families during the pandemic.

Although the team were hit hard by the pandemic, they always ensured that deceased patients were treated with dignity and compassion. They worked hard to respect the burial rites of Muslims and enabled the prompt movement of deceased patients into the care of undertakers. The team remained enthusiastic and positive throughout the pandemic and they continuously checked in on one another, looking after each other’s welfare.

The team (pictured above) also recently received the ‘people’s choice’ award at the prestigious ‘Stars of Herts’ awards evening, an annual celebration for WHHT staff, for their work during the pandemic and for often putting the service before their own personal needs.

Ruth Abdellah, senior anatomical pathology technologist, said: “This award has made us all feel really appreciated. I am really proud of our team and the work we have done to ensure that operations in the mortuary remained smooth, ensuring each deceased patient was treated with the respect and time they deserved.”
