Dr Cairn was an undergraduate at the Royal London Hospital and qualified in 1991. He completed senior house officer training in General Medicine before entering specialist training as a Registrar in 1995 in the North West Thames region in hospitals including the Royal Brompton, Harefield, Charing Cross, Central Middlesex and Hillingdon Hospitals.
Dr Cairn completed a period of research into Bronchiolitis Obliterans Syndrome following lung transplantation at Harefield Hospital and this culminated in the post-graduate degree of MD from the University of London. He received specialist training in Adult Cystic Fibrosis and Lung Transplantation medicine during this post.
Other areas of specialist training included Bronchiectasis, Lung cancer and Sleep medicine. After completing his specialist training he commenced in his current post as Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General Medicine in January 2003. His outpatient practice includes all areas of Respiratory Medicine and he looks after General Medical inpatients at Hemel Hempstead Hospital.
Dr Cairn runs weekly NHS chest clinics at St Albans City Hospital, Hemel Hempstead Hospital and Harefield Hospital. In addition he has an additional chest clinic at Hemel Hempstead on alternate weeks. He attends two lung cancer MDT meetings (one at Hemel Hempstead and one at Harefield) each week and has weekly fibreoptic bronchoscopy lists at Hemel Hempstead and Harefield. He participates in the general medical on call rota at Hemel Hempstead Hospital.
Dr Cairn has been involved in the development of community COPD and home oxygen services over the last three years. He was clinical lead for Respiratory Medicine between 2004 and 2006 for the West Herts Hospital Trust and is currently the clinical lead at Harefield Hospital. He has recently taken up a post on the Critical Care Committee at Hemel Hempstead Hospital.
