We recognise that from the moment you find out you are pregnant your life is going to change. Expecting a baby can lead to a mixture of emotions.

The maternity team at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust are committed to helping all women to have a happy and healthy pregnancy and a safe birth of their baby. We provide care for women and families to help achieve a positive transition to parenthood.

Our dedicated staff work throughout Watford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead offering a range of services from both hospital and community settings. In some instances, visiting you at home when required.

We aim to:

  • work in partnership with you and your family throughout your pregnancy, birth and afterwards, offering all of the services you will need
  • support all women to make decisions about what they want and need from their maternity care
  • offer you a choice of antenatal appointment times and place which suit you and your family
  • provide you with a small team of midwives who will care for you during your pregnancy and beyond
  • offer you a choice of where to give birth. This may depend on yours and your baby’s wellbeing. Your midwife will discuss this with you at you first appointment
Booking your Maternity Care with us

3 different options are available:

  1. On Line Booking: If you are more than 6 weeks pregnant you can now book your maternity care directly with us by clicking on and completing the self-referral form.
  2. GP referral: If you prefer, you can see your GP, who can make a referral
  3. Children’s Centres: Alternatively you can call into a local Children’s Centre where staff will refer into our service (please see list provided)

You will be sent a letter for a booking appointment with a midwife at a Children’s Centre near to where you live, or at the Watford General Hospital. You should receive this appointment within 2 weeks of contacting us.

Where you will have your follow up appointments will vary, and this can be further discussed with your midwife, but in general your appointment will either be at a Children’s Centre, or a clinic based in a GP surgery.
