Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit

Investigations

The scans performed to visualise the pregnancy, are either through the abdomen or if very early on in the pregnancy or if nothing can be visualised through the abdomen, then a vaginal scan will be offered. Neither technique is harmful to you or the pregnancy.

A full bladder is needed for an abdominal scan (you will be asked to empty your bladder if you require a vaginal scan). Depending on the results of the scan, further tests may be required; these may take the form of blood tests or urine tests.
