Surgical Appliances

NHS wigs are provided to patients suffering from either a dermatological condition or those undergoing treatment for cancer.

New patients referrals are accepted from the following sources:
  • Hospital consultant or specialist team
  • GP

An appointment will be made to see either an Appliance Officer who will advise on the best course of treatment and will be able to provide counselling or a specialist wig maker who will assess and make a suitable wig.

You may wish to purchase your own wig, please speak to the appliance officer who will advise you and provide a list of contacts.

Alopecia sufferers are supplied with 2 wigs initially then 1 annually as required. Patients undergoing treatment for cancer are supplied with 1 wig annually as required.

A prescription charge is applicable for the supply of a wig, again the appliance officer will advise the current rate. Help with prescription charges is available for those on a low income, please see the prescription section for more details..
