About the Service / Department at Hemel Hempstead & St Albans

The Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology Hemel Hempstead & St Albans provides a broad range of specialist care covering all aspects of diabetes and endocrinology.

We believe all patients with thyroid problems, dysfunction, nodules or goitre as well as erectile dysfunction should be referred initially for an endocrine opinion.

We also provide a service for the management of chronic fatigue.

Location

Divided more or less equally between Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans City Hospital. Diabetes specialist nurses are based at Hemel Hempstead but deliver out-patient services to St Albans.

Service / Department specialties
  • General diabetes clinic, new patient and follow-ups and general endocrine clinic
  • New patient and follow-ups weekly on both sites
  • Specialist monthly diabetes clinics for adolescents and young adults on both sites
  • Specialist diabetes/endocrine ante-natal clinic held every 2 weeks at St Albans
  • Close links with tertiary endocrine services, including pituitary disorders with Royal Free Hospital, and joint clinic held every 3 months at St Albans
  • Adrenal and parathyroid with Hammersmith and/or Oxford
  • Chronic Fatigue is covering services for all of Herts linked to St Bartholomew's hospital within a managed network

About the Service / Department at Watford General Hospital

The Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Watford General Hospital is based in the Watford Diabetes Centre and the Princess Michael of Kent wing. All acute medical services are now centralised on this site following the opening of the largest Acute Admissions Unit in the country on 11 March 2009.

The Watford department provides a comprehensive in-patient and out-patient clinical service in all aspects of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. It is fully staffed with a team of three experienced consultant endocrinologists, seven diabetes specialist nurses and an endocrine specialist nurse.
