Background

I am a highly skilled and knowledgeable cataract surgeon and medical retina specialist having trained at Moorfields Eye Hospital, Western Eye Hospital, Central Middlesex Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital.

My areas of expertise include: cataract-related and medical retina conditions, such as diabetic retinopathy, diabetic maculopathy, hydroxychloroquine screening, age-related macular degeneration monitoring and choroidal naevus monitoring.

To date I have performed approximately 1,000 laser treatments, including: YAG capsulotomy, YAG peripheral iridotomy and retinal laser (retinopexy and pan-retinal photocoagulation). I have performed and supervised approximately 1,000 cataract procedures. including complex cases, premium lenses, toric lenses, secondary lens implants and combination intravitreal injection treatment.

Additional procedures that I perform, include: bandage contact lens placement and removal, foreign body removal, corneal suture removal, sub-conjunctival injections, intravitreal injections (including anti-VEGF and steroid pellet insertion) and orbital floor injections. I offer combination cataract surgery with intravitreal injection treatments for patients with macular oedema secondary to wet macular degeneration, diabetic maculopathy and retinal vein occlusion.

In 2013, I received the ‘Award for Excellence in Student Education’ from Barts and the London medical school. In the same year, I received the ‘Bill Aylward Bursary Award’ from Moorfields Eye Hospital. In 2022, I received a ‘Star of Herts’ nomination at West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust.

I am the current Clinical Lead (Head of Department) for Ophthalmology at West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust - Watford General Hospital and St. Albans City Hospital - which I have carried out since January 2021. In addition, I am the Medical Retina Lead and College Tutor for the department.

I thoroughly enjoy being a clinical and educational supervisor for two ophthalmology specialty trainees. I have previously held positions, such as: Governance Lead, Educational Lead and FY2 Lead at West Herts Hospital NHS Trust and Staff Governor and rota coordinator for the Medical Retina service at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Teaching and examining has been a huge part of my medical and ophthalmology career. I spent many years being an OSCE examiner for King’s College London medical students. In 2012-2013, I was fortunate to undertake a 1-year Teaching Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital where I taught undergraduate medical students from Barts and the London Medical School and University College London (UCL) skills in history taking and clinical examination for ophthalmology.

Alongside the Teaching Fellowship, I also undertook a Post-graduate Certificate in Medical Education (PGCME) degree. In 2016 – 2019, I was a lecturer for MSc Biology of Vision/Clinical Ophthalmology at the Institute of Ophthalmology (IoO). I was also fortunate to lecture in ‘Ocular Ultrasound’ at the Moorfields Eye Hospital international ‘Macula course’ in 2019.
