VR simulation

Virtual Reality Simulation is a fairly new addition to the WiSER equipment list and programme, however it has proved itself quite popular amongst our Junior Doctors.

Health Education East of England funded the innovative training programme and provided each Trust with two gaming computer systems, paired Oculus Rift, licenses for each Foundation Year Doctor and access to 10 scenarios.

The scenarios used are run through Oxford Medical Simulation software, and much like our simulation we run in the simulation suite, it is an opportunity to practice safely whilst applying critical thinking and decision making skills.

All of the scenarios are designed carefully by clinicians and educators to reflect situations healthcare professionals may face in real life. (Oxford Medical Simulation, 2018).

Feedback

We have asked our trainees for some feedback – they have said:

  • "Good scenario variety and also felt it was quite realistic."
  • "A very useful review of the management of acute problems."
  • "Really useful and good technology."
  • "Very useful practice for prioritisation."
  • "Drilled in importance of keeping nurse and patient updated."
  • "Much more useful and immersive than expected."

Each Trainee received two VR sessions throughout the academic year (August – July) with us as well as their full day session in the simulation suite.
