Picture of the Kolb's experiential learning cylceSimulation is a technique – not a technology – to replace or amplify real life experiences with guided experiences that evokes or replicates substantial aspects of the real work in a fully interactive manner (Gaba, 2010).

It is widely accepted that we retain a small amount of what we read and hear but a much larger amount of what we practice. Simulation in healthcare allows participants to practice technical and non-technical skills in a controlled, safe environment.

Experiential learning is what simulation is all about – facilitated debriefing after a simulation experience allows the participants and their peer group to reflect, understand, draw conclusions and learn from the experience, allowing them to formulate a plan to use this learning in either further simulations or the clinical environment with the overall aim to improve patient safety.

We have a Basic Assumption™ that anyone participating in simulation sessions with WiSER. We believe they are intelligent, capable, care about doing their best and want to improve (Centre for Medical Simulation, Harvard Medical Simulation, 2004).

From August 2019 – July 2020 we saw an amazing 1,372 of you through simulation via a number of courses and programmes, both in and out of the simulation suite based in Watford General Hospital. They include programmes for junior doctors, senior nurses and allied health professionals. You can find a full list of current programmes on the in situ and in suite simulation tabs.
