In-situ simulation

From August 2019 – July 2020 we facilitated 1372 people through simulation based activities or programmes run by WiSER faculty. 152 people were involved as participants with our in situ programmes with 19 sessions running in the departments and on the wards of our Trust (Hemel Hempstead Hospital, St Albans City Hospital, Watford General Hospital). WiSER faculty ran simulations in the following departments during this time:

  • Children’s Emergency
  • Starfish Ward – for paediatric on call physio scenarios
  • Special Care Baby Unit
  • De La Mare and Beckett Wards
  • Out Patients Department

When asked what their most important learning points were from the session that they will take away, people answered:

  • "Very useful! I feel it will contribute to better outcomes for real life patients."
  • "Really useful to practice. Especially in the physical place where the scenario may occur."
  • "Good learning environment with supportive and constructive feedback."
  • "Really useful sim: I felt I was in a safe, non-judgemental environment."

We find people tend to take away not only technical learning points such as equipment or assessment based practices, but non-technical skills such as communication and leadership skills. This is where simulation moves away from traditional skills based training and more experiential learning through recognisable scenarios.
