A Typical day with WiSER

An introduction

We start the day in the debrief room, with an introduction to simulation and go over your specific learning objectives as well as what we expect you may get out of the day.

Following this we head down to the simulation suite to get acquainted with the room, equipment and most importantly, the patients.

First scenario

Typically individual participants or MDT groups will go into the simulation suite where their patient is waiting for them. Usually we have a nurse to handover relevant information and assist with patient care as is normal on the ward.

The scenario usually lasts around 15-20 minutes.

This is all streamed to the debrief room where the other participants are watching and making notes, ready to get involved with the debrief/learning conversation.

Once the scenario is over, the participants will make their way back to the debrief room where faculty, passive participants and active participants will get involved with the debrief/learning conversation. We use the TRUST method:

T – Terminate the scenario clearly Picture shows two colleagues having a discussion regarding a simulated patient.

R – Reflect on what has just happened

U – Understand the whys and hows

S – Summarise the learning from the scenario

T – Take home messages are vocalised from everyone in the group

The amount of scenarios that take place vary from programme to programme but the sessions usually take place over a full 09:00 – 17:00 day.

At the end of the day we might ask for feedback, this is to help us keep the programme up to a high standard and make improvements where necessary. We are learning just as much as the participants.
