Inpatient Guide - Going home

Staff will try to give you as much information as possible concerning your discharge in order that you can arrange to be collected by your relatives/carers. Please talk to staff if you are unable to make your own arrangements or are not fit enough to travel home alone.

Medicines/Wound dressings

If you have been prescribed any medication/dressings during your stay in hospital we will give you a supply to take home. No charge will be made for this. Should you need to continue this medication, your GP will be advised of your medication so that they can issue further prescriptions.

Please remember to collect any medication that you brought with you into hospital with you from the ward staff.

Patients' property

Please ensure that all your valuables (i.e. cash, jewellery or pension books) that were deposited into the Patient Affairs Department for safekeeping, are returned to you before going home. The Patient Affairs Departments are open Monday to Fridays 8.30am to 4.30pm.

Should you be unexpectedly discharged over the weekend you will not be able to collect your valuables from Patient Affairs until the next working day. Please ask the nursing and midwifery staff or on call Site-coordinator for advice.

Medical certificates

Please ask the ward staff for any medical certificates you may need before leaving the ward.

Incoming mail

Please leave a forwarding address for your post.

Library books

Please return any hospital library books back before leaving the hospital. Should the library be closed please hand them to a member of the ward staff.

Medical equipment

Any medical equipment given to you for use at home, e.g., crutches, Zimmer frames etc, must be handed back to either the Physiotherapy Department or Fracture Clinic.

Any equipment loaned from the Occupational Therapy department should be returned to:

Hertfordshire Equipment Service,
Mount Pleasant Lane,
Hatfield,
Hertfordshire
AL9 5NR
Tel: 01707 292 555

Your co-operation would be greatly appreciated in order that new patients may also have access to this equipment.

Patient Lounge

The Patient Lounge provides a comfortable climate-controlled setting where you will be able to wait for your final discharge arrangements. The unit is staffed by registered nurses, so if you require any assistance at any point during your stay with us, please do not hesitate to ask.

Find out more about the Patient Lounge by downloading a leaflet.
