About the Service / Department

The Department of Thoracic Medicine within West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust comprises 4 Consultant Physicians. These Consultants all have shared contracts with the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust. The Respiratory Specialist Nursing Service is hosted by the PCT, although the Consultants and nurses work closely together with a view to providing respiratory medicine services within the hospitals (Hemel Hempstead, St Albans, Watford) and the community.

Location

Thoracic Medicine has two main offices. One is situated at Hemel Hempstead Hospital (Verulam Wing), and the other is at Watford General Hospital.

Service / Department specialties

The Department of Thoracic Medicine provides services for a full range of respiratory disorders. These include airways disease (asthma/COPD), lung cancer, tuberculosis, bronchiectasis/bronchial sepsis, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary thromboembolic disease, sleep disorders and respiratory failure/neuromuscular respiratory disorders.

Referrals

Referrals are received directly from GPs. We also receive referrals by the Choose and Book systems. All of the Consultants are happy to speak directly with GPs over the telephone to discuss specific cases.
