Hard-working nurses, doctors, midwives and managers are conducted - together with other NHS colleagues, by choirmaster Gareth Malone, to give a special one-off concert for Christmas.

A documentary filmed at Watford General Hospital starring the renowned choirmaster and featuring staff from West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust hits the nation’s TV screens on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Seventy staff from the trust made it into the ranks of the choir and gave up their time after work to be put through their musical paces by Gareth.

The Gareth Malone Christmas Concert follows the stories of staff, patients and their families in the run up to Christmas. The programme shows how in six short weeks, the choir came together to give a performance of a lifetime.

Watford General Hospital opened its wards and departments to a small production team from Swan Films who filmed Gareth and staff over a typically busy winter. The film showcases the working life of the hospital and the commitment and care of staff, many of whom will be working on Christmas Day.

WHHT chief executive Christine Allen said: “It was such a pleasure to see our staff perform at the concert. They are so talented and to have delivered such impressive performances after a very short period of rehearsal is truly inspiring. We are very grateful to Gareth Malone for bringing our choir together and long may it continue!”

There are two opportunities to see the programme over the Christmas holidays and it forms part of the BBC’s ‘12 treats for Christmas’ programme trailers. Keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of West Herts staff on the small screen very soon!

Gareth Malone’s Christmas Concert airs on BBC2 on Christmas Eve at 9pm and Christmas Day at 1.30pm.
