Dr Sankara Narayanan, consultant neonatologist at West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust (WHHT), has been named Clinical Practitioner of the Year in the Audit Heroes Awards!

The Clinical Practitioner of the Year award was presented to Dr Narayanan as part of the annual Clinical Audit Awareness Week (#CAAW). The awards celebrate and highlight the fantastic work that takes place across the country to improve healthcare for patients and service users.

The awards were organised by Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP), who promote quality in healthcare and celebrate the impact that clinical audit has on healthcare quality improvement. The Clinical Practitioner of the Year award was separated for national and local services, with Dr Narayanan winning the award for the latter.

Dr Narayanan, who has worked at West Herts since 2010, was nominated for his work by obstetric medical and nursing colleagues for making a variety of quality improvements to his department which he has led, supported and driven.

These quality improvements include:

• Improvements to neonatal hypoglycaemia management. This has led to a reduction in the separation between mothers and babies, reducing mothers’anxiety; the improvement in the short and long term mental health of mothers and the increase in the rates of breast feeding.

• Improvements to antenatal magnesium sulfate administration for preterm mothers to reduce risk of cerebral palsy in infants.

• Reducing necrotising enterocolitis rates. Our rates fell from 18% in 2017 to 0% in 2019.

Dr Narayanan said: “I am delighted to receive the award, which means the judges recognised the improvements we have made to patient outcomes and patient experience. The team has done a fantastic job and evidently improved on our previous performance.”
