Yet another trust service has received recognition for its work to make the service accessible to all patients and visitors. Hertfordshire County Council has awarded a Purple Star to our vascular ultrasound team at Watford General Hospital for delivering a high quality, reasonably adjusted service to help people with learning disabilities.

The vascular ultrasound department is a small team which performs non-invasive investigations to assess blood flow in the legs, arms, abdomen and neck. They help a wide range of patients from the young to the old.

Hilary Gardener, our community strategic liaison nurse for learning disabilities, provided training for every vascular laboratory staff member. Each member of the team completed a workbook which was sent to the Council’s health liaison team for assessment. The workbooks included examples of reasonable adjustments that can be arranged for each person who attends the Vascular Laboratory.

The team also created better signage for each of their clinics and are producing an ‘easy-read’ information leaflet for patients. They were also granted a licence to use Makaton signage in their clinics. Makaton is a language programme which uses signs and symbols to help people to communicate.

Amy Sinclair, lead vascular scientist, said: “We are very pleased to be receiving our award. As a team we have learnt about the small changes we can make to our service that has a positive impact on patients with learning disabilities.”
