A&E Services Transfers from Hemel Hempstead to Watford General Hospital on Time and to Plan
Posted on: 9 March 2009
From Wednesday 11 March 2009, the A&E service at Hemel Hempstead General Hospital will close and its services will transfer to the new improved emergency department at Watford General Hospital. This includes a new 120 bedded Acute Admissions Unit (AAU) and an expanded Children’s Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit.
After 11 March 2009, if a patient in the Hemel Hempstead area calls 999 the ambulance and paramedic crew will decide which is the most appropriate place to treat the patient's individual condition. This could include the Urgent Care Centre at Hemel Hempstead General Hospital.
Hemel Hempstead Hospital's Urgent Care Centre has been operating smoothly and successfully since the beginning of October 2008 and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It will continue to treat the majority of local patients who previously attended Hemel Hempstead's A&E department for their minor illnesses and injuries.

Notes to Editors:
- The AAU will be the largest in the country and offers patients requiring emergency treatment rapid assessment and diagnosis by a Consultant from the onset of admission.
- Information regarding the Urgent Care Centre (UCC):
- Over 6000 people have attended the Urgent Care Centre since it opened on 1 October 2008
- 99% of patients came in under their own steam and 20 patients arrived by ambulance
- Over 80% of attendees were in the UCC for less than 2 hours
- The average waiting time for a consultation has been 21 minutes
- Most patients with injuries and illnesses do not need the 999 service, but any patients who remain concerned should go to the Urgent Care Centre or the A&E Department at Watford General Hospital.
