Interview tips

Preparing for the interview

A successful interview is all about good preparation.

  • Make sure you are familiar with the job description, person specification and your application form, so that when asked about it you can answer confidently
  • Review our Trust website, including our values, annual report and quality account
  • Think about what questions you might be asked, and how you might respond
  • Before the interview, make a list of any questions you might want to ask.

First impressions

Here's some ideas on how to make a good first impression:

  • Arrive in plenty of time and allow for time to park and find the location of the interview
  • Introduce yourself calmly and confidently to everyone in the room
  • Make eye contact and direct your answers to the whole panel
  • Keep your body language ‘open’.  Don’t cross your arms even if you’re nervous as this can make you appear defensive
  • Remember to smile. It will help you to relax and will show your enthusiastic and approachable side.

During the interview

Interviews are an opportunity to sell yourself. Here's our tips on how to perform to your best:

  • Be clear and concise in your answers to interview questions
  • Use examples to demonstrate your experience
  • Remember to use 'I' rather than 'we'
  • If you don’t understand a question, ask for it to be repeated
  • If you don’t know the answer to a question, be honest and say so
  • Don't assume the interview panel know the details of your CV or application
  • Remember to ask any questions, it will show you are interested in the role
  • If the interview covers all of your pre-prepared questions, take a second to review your list and confirm that you have no further questions. This will show the panel you have taken the trouble to think about the interview and the role.

After the interview

It is always good to get feedback from the recruiting manager, whether successful or not. Interviews are a valuable source of reflection, and are ideal learning environments.
