Professional profile

I qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School in 1998. I undertook house officer training and A & E jobs in London, before moving to Nottingham for 2 years to complete junior medical training (SHO).I undertook my first Respiratory registrar training in Sydney, Australia where I spent one year at Westmead hospital obtaining a very good grounding, particularly in Sleep Medicine, physiology and COPD.

I then undertook a year of research at St Vincent’s hospital in Sydney when I obtained my first publication in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. This was looking at oxidative stress and inflammatory markers in Bronchoalveolar Lavage and exhaled breath condensate in lung transplant patients.

On my return to the UK, I moved back to London to undergo the remainder of my training. I undertook further research at the Royal Brompton Hospital, working with Dr Nick Hopkinson and Prof Mike Polkey looking at the effects of Vitamin D on Muscle Strength in COPD, and subsequently obtained my MD. I spent 6 months at the Lane Fox Unit in Guys Hospital managing Respiratory Failure and completed my SPR training at Kings Hospital in London before obtaining my consultant post here at West Herts Hospital. I now lead the lung cancer MDT here and am hoping to steer the trust towards a smoke free agenda.

Personal profile

I have 2 young children at home. I enjoy reading, gardening and music, and have until recently played my cello in the Saint Albans Symphony orchestra which I am hoping to take up again in the not too distant future.
