West Herts Breast Care Unit
Welcome
About our logo: The purple pasque flower, county flower of Hertfordshire, backed by the yellow evening primrose and the violet periwinkle (Vinca), representing treatment of breast disease, from simple breast pain (evening primrose oil) to advanced metastatic disease (vinca alkaloids)
The Breast Care Unit is located in St Albans City Hospital. The clinic area is designed so that the clinics, X-ray department, breast care nurses, secretaries and receptionist are located next to each other. This means patients' visits are seamless when arranging appointments, having investigations or attending for radiology.
St Albans City Hospital is an elective admission site. Approximately 90% of breast surgery operations can be performed here. An elective admission site has the protection of beds from emergencies. It has a calmer atmosphere than the acute hospitals.
The unit is led by four consultant surgeons, two consultant oncologists and four consultant radiologists, all with a major interest in breast disease.
Our medical staff includes one specialist doctor, two registrars and three advanced nurse practitioners specialising in breast disease. We have four Macmillan breast care nurses who are supported by research nurse Jackie Evans and the clinic staff.
The team meets weekly to discuss the investigations and management of patients at various points during their treatment.
