West Hertfordshire Hospital Charity launches its new name with special Christmas appeal

Posted: 1 November 2018

The charity for Watford General, Hemel Hempstead and St Albans City Hospital is unveiling its brand new name today by launching a very special Christmas appeal. After face to face consultations with over 500 patients, families and staff, the charity is delighted to unveil ‘Raise’ as its new name. It had previously been called ‘West Hertfordshire Hospitals Charity’.  Raise is designed to be an uplifting, positive and active name to reflect the love and loyalty that local communities have for their local hospitals.

The charity is taking the opportunity to launch its ‘Raise a smile this Christmas’ appeal because it wants every older patient spending the festive season in hospital to have a present to open.

Charity Director Samantha Sherratt said: “Everyone wants to be home for the celebrations, but for some poorly patients this simply isn’t possible. Our staff work hard to make December a happy time, but to make it extra special we are asking our local businesses and our local communities to support our ‘Raise a smile this Christmas’ appeal by giving gifts or making a donation. We’re determined that our patients don’t miss out on the spirit of the season simply because they are in hospital. A thoughtful, heartfelt present is a lovely way to spread a bit of joy.

“Presents are hugely important – it’s about keeping the magic alive for patients who are spending the festive season in hospital. By buying a gift, well-wishers can let them know that someone is thinking of them. This is particularly important for those who don’t have many visits from friends and family.”

There are three ways well-wishers can help:

  1. Ask us for our wish list, buy a present and drop it into the reception desk at Watford General, Hemel Hempstead or St Albans City Hospitals
  2. Make a donation to our older people’s services team via www.justgiving.com/campaign/raiseasmile so they can buy the presents for their patients
  3. You can buy a gift online from http://amzn.eu/j8Jz7fw

The hospital is looking for gifts which fall into the following categories: Sweet treats, entertainment, health and beauty, and warmth. Here are a few gifts ideas:

Sweet treats:

Chocolate orange, Boxed chocolates (e.g., Maltesers), Boxed biscuits
