Acute children's services

Children's Emergency department

The Children's Emergency Department provides emergency care for children and young people up to the age of 16. It is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The department has a number of nursing staff who are qualified Emergency Nurse Practitioners. All nursing staff operate within competencies that allow them to assess, treat and discharge patients with a number of minor injuries, ensuring a smooth and efficient patient pathway.

The Children's Emergency Department is located alongside the main A&E department in the main block on the ground floor.

Referrals / Appointments

GPs can refer children and young people to the Children's Emergency Department. Patients are seen be a Paediatric Doctor after triage, however the Paediatric Registrar has to be aware of the referral before the patient arrives in the department. This service is accessed by contacting the Paediatric Registrar through the hospital switchboard.
