Gynaecology Oncology

Mr Padwick leads the Gynaecology Oncology service, with Mr Owen bringing in patients from Luton and Dunstable for surgery at Watford General hospital, are supported by Nurse Specialists Cath Cremins and Wendy Bannister.

Mr Padwick currently provides care for around 100 newly diagnosed cancer patients per year, and Mr Owen approximately 40, with these numbers rising year on year. Follow up treatment and management is given through outpatient clinics. If patients require Radiotherapy or Chemotherapy treatment they are referred to the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre.

West Hertfordshire Hospital NHS Trust plans to become the main surgical cancer centre for Hertfordshire by April 2009, by which time over 250 major case surgeries will be performed at Watford General Hospital. Around 100 of these cases being transferred in from East and North Hertfordshire Hospitals.

It is proposed that over the next 5 years the Service will consume activity from surrounding areas, namely the Northwick Park and Hillingdon region. In order to deal with this increased activity it is anticipated a further Nurse Specialist and Oncologist consultant will be recruited.

Presently patients are based on Elizabeth ward, and are mixed with General Gynaecology patients, however there are plans to divide the ward so that between 8 and 12 beds are dedicated to Oncology patients, who can be cared for by a dedicated Oncology Nurse..
