Investment in Hemel Continues as New Improved Outpatient Department Opens
Posted: September 18th 2009
From Monday 21 September 2009, patients at Hemel Hempstead Hospital will be seen and treated in a new purpose-designed
Outpatient Department. This new department is part of the Trust’s £7m programme of investment to improve services for patients on the Hemel Hempstead hospital site.
The new Outpatient Department will be located on Level 2 of Verulam Wing (the middle floor). Patients can access the service from the new main entrance on level 3 of Verulam Wing next to the main visitors' car park, at the top end of the hospital site.
Nearly 8,000 patients a month go through the doors of the Outpatient Department and the new department will continue to offer patients the same wide range of outpatient services that has always been provided at Hemel Hempstead.
Hemel Hempstead hospital also provides diagnostic services, such as x-ray, ultrasound and blood tests, with around 2,500 tests being carried out each month. Services previously located in the Windsor Day Hospital can now be found on Level 3 in the Hanover Day Unit; services largely for older people along aside thoracic medicine. Therapies such as physiotherapy and cardiac rehabilitation have now relocated to Level 1 of Verulam Wing with ground floor access.
MSK Cat and Speech and Language Therapy are provided temporarily in the Windsor Day Hospital. Many of these areas have been refurbished as part of the redevelopment plans. Another important service provided at Hemel Hempstead is the 24-hour a day urgent care service, which sees and treats around 2,500 patients a month for urgent, but not life-threatening conditions. Intermediate care is also available for patients who do not require the care of a general hospital, but need some degree of rehabilitation and recuperation.
