The service changes we are making in West Hertfordshire are some of the biggest changes taking place in the NHS in the coming year. Centralisation of emergency services will be complete by early March 2009 when the new 120-bed Acute Admissions Unit (AAU) will open its doors. The AAU is believed to be the largest in the country. AAU is the 'front door' for the majority of patients requiring emergency treatment, including those referred directly by their GP. It will include 2 cardiac catheter labs, x-ray, CT and ultrasound facilities and a new hospital pharmacy. It will be open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
In addition to the new AAU, Watford General is currently undergoing a major refurbishment programme, including the expansion of its Children's Emergency, Critical Care and Resuscitation departments
The development of a new purpose-built facility for the services of the local general hospital in Hemel Hempstead is being led by West Hertfordshire PCT. This will offer opportunities for staff to work in urgent care centre services, diagnostics, outpatients, and intermediate care beds. Work has already started on the planning for this facility so that it will be ready in approximately 4 years' time.
