Improving Working Lives

Improving Working Lives is the name for the collection of employment practices and staff services that are available to our employees to help them get the most out of work, and to strike that all important balance between work and home life.

Flexibility, fairness, equality

IWL practices are about all staff experiencing flexibility, fairness and equality at work. It includes childcare provision, flexible working arrangements, investment in training and development, tackling discrimination and harassment, feeling safe at work and improving diversity.

The Seven Standards

Improving Working Lives is a national framework of measures that all NHS employers have made a pledge to deliver. West Herts Trust is no exception, and has been working in a number of areas to improve its employees' experience of being at work. Improving Working Lives is made up of seven standards:

  • Workforce Strategy and Management
  • Equality and Diversity
  • Communication and Involvement
  • Flexible Working
  • Healthy Working
  • Training and Development
  • Flexible Retirement and Support for Carers
