Celebrating Excellence Staff Award

Award Winners

August 2017

Winners: Alex Newland-Smith and Karen Middleton

Nominated by: Dr Matthew Knight, and Staff and patient respectively

Alex Newland-Smith, Lead pulmonary physiologist, Respiratory medicine, Hemel Hempstead

Nomination: Alex has been an integral member of our team for a number of years, during which time he has developed a fully functioning and well regarded pulmonary physiology department based at Hemel Hempstead, helpng us to commit to maintaing a full respiratory service in the Hemel site.

He has been integral in developing a physiology service at Watford for Watford residents and helped us develop an exercise testing service to improve the service for patients with unexplained breathlessness. I rarely do a clinic where at least one patient does not give me wonderful feedback about how professional and kind Alex is.

His caring and kind attitude to patients is commented on by patients and other staff. I have received personal communications from Glenda Esmond, the director of our partner organisation in respiratory medicine (CLCH) with whom we run a community respiratory service with stating that the feedback she receives is the same. She has told me that Alex frequently puts himself out to help investigate and manage patients when tests are needed with very short notice.

All of the consultants in Respiratory medicine value and respect the expert support that Alex provides to us - the professional quality of his work is extremely high, and the pride and passion that he puts into his work is felt by colleagues and patients alike.

He is always happy to rise to new challenges and willing to spend time educating himself and learning new and up to date techniques to enhance the quality of care that we can give our patients. In summary, we think that Alex is one of the shining stars of our department, making patients feel cared for and appreciated (enhancing their experience) as well as delivering safe and effective care.
